What is Lent

Lent the period preceding Easter, which is devoted to fasting, abstinence, and penitence in commemoration of Christ’s fasting in the wilderness. This is a season within forty days starting on the Ash Wednesday ending with Easter Sunday when Christ’ resurrection is remembered. However, many Protestant denominations also acknowledge Lent’ importance through different exercises and practices.

When does lent start & end?

Since 1970, in the Roman Rite Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on the evening of Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This comprises a period of 44 days. The Lenten fast excludes Sundays and continues through Good Friday and Holy Saturday, totaling 40 days (though the Eucharistic Fast still applies).

Origins and Symbolism:

In the earliest times, Christianity established a period called Lent for newly converted individuals to prepare themselves for baptism on Easter Sunday.. Over time, lent’s duration and customs changed to become a time of renewal spiritually, or self-examination for all believers.

The forty-day period of Lent is symbolic to the time Jesus fasted in the wilderness and overcame temptations before embarking on his public ministry. Through its emphasis on sacrifice, Lent’s inward journey reflects that of Christ reminding people about importance thereof in spiritual disciplines.

Lent prayer and fastingObservances and Practices:

Lent calls upon Christians to adopt activities that encourage spiritual development, self-control and stronger commitment towards God. Some common observances include:

Fasting: Fasting is a traditional religious activity practiced during Lent, which means self-abnegation. Vegetarianism and fasting from meat are common among Christians while some may abstain from certain habits.

Prayer: Prayer is intensified during lent as an act of getting back to God through conversation and participation. Many churches have special prayer meetings and retreats as well as other spiritual materials for use in this season.

Almsgiving: Likewise, giving alms or charity, is another important aspect of the Lenten practice. Devotees should share their wealth with the poor to live out the values of compassion and love for those who suffer most in society.

Repentance and Reconciliation:

The Easter season offers time for believers to search themselves, repent their sins and seek the forgiveness of others before reconciling with both parties. Individuals seeking spiritual healing usually participate in reconciliation or penance services in churches to repent regularly.

Other Spiritual Disciplines in Lent:

Besides fasting, prayer and almsgiving during this period, other spiritual disciplines are reading of scriptures, mediation and acts of self-denial. They enable believers to develop a greater consciousness about their spiritual conditions and approach God.

Meaning of EasterMeaning of Easter:

The climax of Lent is Easter celebration which marks the holiest day in the Christian calendar; it recalls the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Before one can fully embrace the joy and hope of Easter where there is victory over sin and death as well as new life promised by Christ, the season of Lent prepares them.

Conclusion:

Lent is a holy time of readiness, meditation and spiritual development for Christians all over the globe. It is a period of fasting, almsgiving, prayer and other practices that invite believers to accompany Jesus through the desert of temptations which will culminate in a happy celebration of resurrection on Easter Sunday. May this season be a time of renewal and transformation as we draw nearer to God and experience the abundant grace of his love and mercy.
